Points of Interest Pages for Locations Launched By Twitter

Twitter is now in the process of adding location based pages to their website the company announced.
This new feature is something that is called Points of Interest. Basically, beginning very soon, the user will have the ability to click on a places name and a location tag should it exist and then see that said place on a map via tweet.
Next to that map the user will be able to see what people are talking about in regards to that location in a search results view section. From what has been seen so far it’s a very convenient entry to the current chatter in Twitter about specific places or cities.
There is going to be a developer API which will have more information released later. What the API will do is let the developers build the features into client applications so it’ll be more accessible from places other than simply the Twitter website only sooner than later.
This announcement was made by Evan Williams, who is the Twitter CEO during the Chirp developer conference. There are hundreds of developers at Chirp and when the announcement was made it of course drew a rousing round of applause from the audience.
The announcement is a very big step forward in regards to the Twitter platform and when it comes down to it location is all about relevancy. Relevancy is not just in regards to latitude and longitude location but as to a real place in the real world.
There has been tremendous growth around the location based services lately, especially when it comes to mobile phones, in regards to the fact that it has become extremely central to the user experience of almost every social application or search based application.
Late in 2009 Twitter had added the ability for users to put in a location in their tweets which allowed for the tweets to become much more relevant for search applications. The location tags that are out there are basically a geotag that indicates the latitude and longitude, also referred to as latlongs.
