Android Outselling iPhones

It might be possible that Google has actually finally found the way to make an actual challenge to the supremacy that is the Apple iPhone, and no, it’s not the Nexus One. Or it’s not at least just the Nexus One on its own.
While it does seem like Google has really been searching everywhere, high and low, for something that can be an iPhone killer ever since October ’08 when the G1 was released or the rumors that began in December ’06, they’ve actually hit it the real way to begin a takeover of the smartphone market, by the OS.
In Q1 of 2010 the Google Android OS outsold the iPhone and according to customer surveys, conducted by NPD. With all of the dozens of devices which offer various features, and the non exclusive carrier ability the Android really is a more versatile option. There are some that say the only reason Android beat the iPhone is because of the wider availability, but that’s not really the point and it doesn’t really matter.

Both of the phones do still lag behind the RIM Blackberry, Android though was the 2nd OS in the sales for Q1 taking a total of 28% of the market. The iPhone only saw 21% of the market. The numbers that come in from comScore though show that the Android does have a little catch up left to play though as they only have 9% of the total overall smartphone market. The iPhones have 25% of the total market and Microsoft came in third. Blackberry pulls the win there as well having 42% of the overall market.
This could actually be good news for Apple though believe it or not. Apple could be facing some antitrust actions from the United States government. If they’re not really dominant in this area though maybe it’s not really quite as big of a concern for the DOJ though, you think?
Is actually going to end up better news for Google or Apple? Can the Android continue to steal the market share from the iPhone? That remains to be seen.
