Android Making Strides in the Blackberry and iPhone Race

The Android is coming on really strong in the race against the Blackberry from RIM and the Apple iPhone. If Steve Jobs takes his iPhone away from his hear and puts his ear to the ground he could be hearing the near sounds of hoof beats coming up close. If he’s using the iPhone 4 it might drop the call for him so half the job is done there.
For the first time in history there are more mobile phone consumers that are purchasing the handsets that are running the Android operating system from Google than that of the Apple iPhone. Don’t take my word for it, this comes from the good folks over at research giant Nielsen.
Their researchers found out that of 27% of the people that purchased a smartphone in the last six month period that ended in June went for the Android and only 23% of people in that same time period went for the iPhone. This put the Android in second place, only being behind smartphone giant RIM and their Blackberry smartphone.
That’s a major jump from the previous tally of Nielsen in the prior six month period that had ended in March. At that point the figures came down as follows:
•    Blackberry got 36% of the smartphone market
•    The iPhone got 27% of the market
•    Android only got 17% of the market
There’s no reason for Apple to get into a full fledged panic yet through. The Android phones are still in fourth place overall betting 1 in 4 of the mobile subscribers that currently have a smartphone although this gap is lessening. The market breaks down with Blackberry in the lead with 35%, Apple following shortly thereafter with 28%, Microsoft Windows Mobile is barely hanging onto third with 15% and the Android phones now have 13% of the market.
