Free Phone Ringtone Downloads (recommendations)
You often see the offerings for free phone ringtones online. The website group promises you free ringtone downloads if you just visit their site, or offer a bit of personal contact information. While most of the offers are legitimate such as cell-phone-plans.net, other website are sometimes sponsored by hackers or unscrupulous marketing companies.
The “free” phone ringtones come with many strings attached, and sometimes end up costing the end user money. So, here are some steps to be sure you are not getting ripped off by offers for free ringtone downloads.
1. Don’t give out your credit card number: If a site is offering free ringtone downloads, you expect them to be free. If the company asks for your credit card number or bank account number, then they are likely a “subscriber” site. This means they will charge your account each month, even if you don’t utilize their free phone ringtones. If you find small monthly charges to your account, chances are they are from the ringtone site. Contact them immediately and cease the subscription.
2. Read the fine print: Some companies will ask for your credit card number, while promising they won’t charge your card for a limited time. Read the fine print. These free offers usually last one to six months, and then they start charging your card a subscription fee. So, be sure to read all the User Agreements that accompany any free phone ringtones offers.
3. Don’t Join Clubs: In the past, there were many “CD clubs” which allowed people to get free CDs simply for joining a club. The club charged a monthly fee after a set amount of time. Many free ringtone downloads sites are using the same trick. They will have you join a club, get free phone ringtones, and then after two or three months, you’ll be charged membership fees. These clubs force you to be a member for a specific amount of time if you took them up on the free phone ringtones offer. It is much like a lease that can’t be broken for an amount of time. Again, read the fine print in the Users Agreement.
4. Viruses and More: Even if you are a cautious consumer who has investigated a site, read the fine print, and determined a site to be legitimate, there can still be hidden dangers. There are some very unscrupulous marketing companies and hackers that will attach worms or viruses to free ringtone downloads. These viruses will infiltrate your computer and allow the hacker to get your personal information, all without you ever knowing! Run a good spyware or ad-aware detector to search for such worms and viruses after you download free ringtones.
Of course, not all offers for free ringtone downloads are illegitimate. Most of the offers are legitimate from honorable sites like cell-phone-plans.net’s free ringtones. If you have questions about sites offering free ringtone downloads, check out our cell phone forums and ask other users to find out their opinions. After all, knowledge is power.
