What is Nextel?
Nextel is a U.S. based wireless communications company that was originally founded by Morgan O’Brien in 1987. When O’Brien created his wireless company in 1987, he named the company FleetCall, though he later changed the name to Nextel. Thanks to a number of wealthy and influential investors, Nextel grew from a small company to the wireless giant that it is today.
Nextel stood out from the crowd early in the wireless game, since it was the first company to create various unlimited calling plans. Nextel was also the first company to create the “push-to-talk” system, which was immediately popular. This system allowed cell phones to operate in the same manner as walkie-talkies, and many people instantly gravitated towards these phones.
When Nextel upgraded to a 2G network, GPS (global positioning system) features were added to Nextel phones. Since no other company had GPS capabilities at the time, many consumers paid attention to Nextel products. In 2005, Sprint acquired Nextel, though the Nextel network still maintains its original name.
Motorola currently manufactures almost all Nextel phones (excluding the BlackBerry, which is manufactured by Research In Motion). Nextel is a popular consumer company, and many consumers enjoy the various phones, plans, and promotions that Sprint offers
