Google Voice: Free Calls, SMS, Visual Voicemail on iPhone and Palm

Google and Apple have long been at odds over the Google Voice app, which lets mobile users transcribe voicemails, make free VOIP and 3G calls and send free SMS messages and even went as far as pulling the plug on the official Google Voice iPhone app. Google hasn’t made any headway with Apple directly, but they’ve gone ahead and made it a non-issue by revamping the web interface for Google Voice so you can perform all of the above functions from your webOS or iPhone browser.

It’s easy. If you don’t already have a Google Voice account, go request an invite now. Alternately, you can get someone who already has a Google Voice account to send you an invite for instant activation (I’ve got 3 invites left – come up with a suitable bribe and you’re in). Once you get your login, you’ll be able to choose your number and your forwarding options, etc.

As you can see, this phone dialer is embedded in Safari.

Next, point your mobile browser to m.google.com/voice and you’ll instantly be looking at the brand spankin’ new Google Voice dialer. From here, you can read transcribed voice mail messages and place calls and send SMS messages to your contacts.

You can send SMS messages from Google Voice.

TXT messages show up on mobile phones just like they normally would. ("Geelong" is a horrible typo for "hello")

And there you have it – you’re up and running with Google Voice on the iPhone! You can go ahead and bookmark Google Voice in Safari so you can come back to it whenever you want to make a call. Or to completely make the switch from AT&T to Google Voice, check out our tutorial on setting up your iPhone with Google Voice.
